Not gas, but coal as a stabilizer RES in Germany?
The German Decarbonisation Commission planned to close the operation of coal-fired power plants in Germany until 2033. Meanwhile, the German association of hard coal power plant operators (VKU) proposed a longer operation of these power plants, it is until 2038.Such an operation would allow the abandonment of the construction of new 17 GW of gas capacity, which is to constitute a renewable energy stabilizer. Due to the fact that in Germany, almost at the same time, the government plans to abandon coal and atom as fuels for energy production, there is a concern that gas itself may be insufficient stabilizer for renewable energy.According to VKU, such stabilization may be provided by hard coal, especially since soon the Datteln IV Power Plant - the cleanest coal-fired power plant in the world with a capacity of 1,100 MW - is to be launched in North Rhine-Westphalia.
