CO2 consumption should be reduced, not just its production
Professor Dieter Helm from the University of Oxford referred to the issue of decarbonisation of the European Union. He emphasized that actions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions should cover the whole world, as those carried out only at the EU level will not bring the intended effect. The professor also noted that the EU countries will only stop global warming if they actually limit the use of CO2-intensive technologies, and not only decrease internal emission. Our current efforts to potentially achieve zero carbon emissions are actually leading to carbon leakage. We are giving up the domestic industry, which is in decline, in favor of importing certain products, e.g. from China, thus we still contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases, but in a different region of the world, which in fact has nothing to do with the fight against climate change.
